About Our Training

The ATACC Group Canada provides Law Enforcement Officers with an online training program to meet the specific casualty care needs of your detachment. 

 We are a medically led organization, principally driven by people with a background in the health sector and emergency services. We provide the most up to date training in pre-hospital care and now offer this through our online training platform.

The content of this course has been specially designed for your Officers. It offers relevant training content based on the Rescue Trauma and Casualty Care Course core content. 

We provide online discussion through our Community Group, live content and specialized international core content. At the end of our training your Officers will have covered key life saving teaching and techniques.

Instructors

ATACC Instructor Matthew Caldwell

Constable Matt Caldwell began his Policing career in 2006 as a member of the Ottawa Police Service. While in Ottawa, Matt served 8 years with the Canadian Ski Patrol as an Assistant First Aid Instructor, On hill Instructor, Team leader and Assistant Patrol Leader. Matt accepted a new position with the Nelson Police Department in October 2014, relocating his family to Nelson BC. Matt has served as a core RTACC instructor and completed the TECC course. Matt is also distinguished as possibly the only Police Officer in BC as a Penthrox train the trainer graduate. Matt has a passion for advancing his own medical skills and sharing those skills with his First Responder Colleagues. He believes that Police Officers have an opportunity to play a more active role in pre-hospital medical interventions alongside Fire Services and Ambulance. Matt is a proud member of the ATACC Academy instructor cadre.

ATACC Group Medical Director Dr. Nic Sparrow

Dr. Nicholas Sparrow MBBS, BSC, CCFP-EM Dr. Nic received his medical training in London, England and qualified in 2001. He emmigrated to Canada in 2008. He moved to Nelson with his family approximately ten years ago and works in the ER at Kootenay Lake Hospital, B.C, Canada. He is the ATACC Group Canada Medical Director and also serve as Fire Medical Director for the RDCK Fire Services. He volunteers his time as an EMS physician responding to the most critical 911 calls in the Kootenay Region and to date has responded to over 800 calls in the Nelson area. He is passion about saving lives, helping the most critically ill and injured patients and supporting the emergency services.

ATACC Instructor Mercedes Hicks

Mercedes Hicks RN, BScN Upon completion of her nursing degree at Thompson Rivers University Mercedes returned to her hometown of New Denver. Mercedes is passionate about delivering high quality medical care to patients in her community in a variety of capacities. She is a Registered Nurse and has worked in various emergency departments throughout the West Kootenays. Mercedes has completed her Emergency Nursing Specialty through the British Columbia Institute of Technology. She is also actively involved with the New Denver and Area Volunteer Fire Department and acts as the Medical Captain for their team. When Mercedes isn’t working her day job as a nurse or volunteering for the fire department you can find her enjoying the Kootenays with her two dogs!

  • What benefits would RCMP Officers have in taking the RTACC Training ?

    There are a number of benefits to taking this online training. We will provide your Police Officers with remote online trauma training that can be enhanced with didactic in service training. We will cover all the Rescue Trauma & Casualty Care Core Content and provide you with access to additional specialist modules for police medics from instructors around the world. We will assist and support your Training Officer(s) to deliver high fidelity ATACC Sims and help them in teaching your Police Officers core competency skills. At the end of the training your Police Officers will obtain an RTACC Certificate but more importantly they'll be street ready to deal with trauma and medical emergencies.

  • What are the topics covered throughout this course and are there any prerequisites ?

    The Program has 20 modules covering topics such as Scene Safety, Massive Hemorrhage, Airway, Respiration, Circulation, Head Injury & Others, Medical Emergencies, Mass Casualties Incidents, Vehicle Extrication and other topics. There are no pre-requisites other than being part of an RCMP Police Detachment. This Program is not open to individuals.   • What qualification is provided at the end of the course ?

    RTACC Certification and over 20 hours Continuous Professional Development (CPD) hours.
